~*~a homecoming~*~

  • Mood: ~*~homesick~*~
  • Music: ~*~birdsongs~*~

her eagerness to leave the desert REZ was almost papable.....and now nothing would delay her going...her legal safety assured now thanks to Dr Shambala...Justice Annakpok......and the legal center on the REZ.....she and Joseph repacked their car to once again start the trip west to the ocean....

she had refused all other test....except normal pre-partum ones ...like the ones she'd had with Michael.....they could all be done in Neah Bay....on the Makah REZ.....

she and her family would have 10 glorious weeks on the Washington coast....she had promised her doctors she would be back when she was 34 weeks gestation so that the child could be born on the 4 Corners REZ......she knew they were more capable of intervening if her daughter was a very difficult delivery......she had reluctantly accepted that fact.... but she trusted her OB/GNY completely to advise her about such things

Dr Serena Gateway had been the OB/GNY on the Rez for nearly 30 years....she paid little attention to the "gene cleaning" clients at the 4 Corners.....she was just a regular doc....busy with all the women...... gene cleaned or not....helping them with all those natural changes that women have from puberty to old age.....she loved working in this specialty....to be involved in and warmed by the company of women......

when she turned 50 the women there gave her a pair of homemade mocassins and a small gold pen shaped like mocassins....they told her it was her right of passage into that very distingiushed place of an elder

"a Crone"...a wise one....only when a woman reached this life milepost was this special wreathe of personhood bequeath to her.....she found herself feeling very honored....and never looked at her aging in the same way again......

she gave Natalynn leave to go....to seek and gather the strength for the events to come .....by the deeply spiritual rituals and familial relationships of the whole Makah tribe on the coast......

Serena sensed that this was a time frame that Natalynn so urgently needed to fully grasp the implications of this unusual child within her....she needed to be in the most supportive environment possible to find that peaceful and balance place of safety within herself

she had lived among Indians long enough to fully understand their culture and knew that for Natalynn this would only be possible  walking thru the abundantly lush and green coastal forest.....strolling barefoot on the wet sandy shoreline of the Pacific....watching the ravens dive and curl upward and downward in the changeable currents.....their watcher eyes....long the Totem of the Makah......would watch over but not spy on her... or reveal her secret to the other world....

the passage about the doctor never looking at aging the same way again is beautiful - it spoke to me of a respect for knowledge and experience above beauty and youth that i HAVE NEVER KNOWN. wonderful.
